Why Love Cranberries: They’re SUPER Good for You
Cranberries are an incredibly healthy addition to any diet and have been called a “superfood”. Cranberries contain many nutrients that keep the body strong and reduce chance for disease. The fruit contains calcium, which is good for bone strength, and antioxidants and proanthocyanidin, which are the nutrients that contain most of the health benefits.
A lot of the benefits from cranberries work by removing unhealthy activity from the body. Cranberries, and the nutrients contained, are a regulator that works to keep the body healthy, looking, and smelling good.
Antioxidants are nutrients that remove inhibitors, called free radicals, from passing oxygen through the blood of the body. Increased oxygen running through the blood helps keep cells function properly.
Free radicals form chain reactions which can lead to the development and spread of cancer. Free radicals also speed up the aging process by making the body work harder. When the body works harder, and cells aren’t working properly due to the radicals, the body is more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes. Antioxidants work to rid the body of these free radicals, keep the body healthy, functioning, and strong, and keep away nasty diseases.
Cranberries are rich in antioxidants. They contain vitamin C and fiber and are one of the best disease-fighting foods commonly available. Vitamin C protects against immune system deficiencies – keeping the body from getting sick, cardiovascular disease, eye disease, and visible wrinkles. Fiber is a carbohydrate that passes through the body and regulates sugar in the body. Because of the ability to regulate sugar, cranberries, and the fiber in the berries, help keep diabetes in check.
The antioxidants in cranberries work to prevent the growth and spread of cancer cells and tumors, including breast and prostate cancers, by maintaining immune system strength and breaking the free radical chains that cancer cells depend on to spread.
Proanthocyanidins are a particular antioxidant found in cranberries that clears bacteria and cleanses toxins. Proanthocyanidins clear bacteria to prevent blood clots, stomach diseases, and e-coli.
One of the most well-known benefits of cranberries is their ability to reduce risk of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). The proanthocyanidins that clear bacteria from stomach lining and blood also clear bacteria from the bladder and urethra. Studies have shown that regular consumption of cranberries can reduce the risk of UTI by up to 40 percent.
Proanthocyanidins fight gum disease by removing plaque, which are bacteria that build up in the mouth. The clearing of bacteria in the mouth not only has positive long-term affects of removing gum disease and soreness, but the removal of mouth bacteria helps keep the breath fresh and the smile attractive.
Not all cranberry products are created equal. If you want to get the maximum health benefits out of your cranberries, or juice or sauce, you’re going to want to find the purest form of cranberries possible. Cranberries found without sugar or preservatives are best. Many sauces and juices have added sugar. Sugar increases bacteria that causes diseases, which acts against all the benefits found in cranberries.
So, find a good cranberry product without added sugar. Just because many products have added sugar, healthy cranberry snacks can be found in the form of juice, dried berries, sauce, and fresh berries. That said, fresh berries will maintain the highest amount of nutrients. If you need to remove free radicals in a hurry, a handful of fresh cranberries will get you further than a cup of juice.
The short-term (breath) and long-term (cancer and heart health) benefits make cranberries a nutritious addition to any diet. Drink the juice, add some dried berries to a salad, spread the sauce on the turkey, or eat a handful of cranberries every day to keep your body running at its potential.
